Perfect Sense

I want someone to see this film so we can discuss it. The plot is simple: A chef and a scientist fall in love as an epidemic begins to rob people of their sensory perceptions. It’s not a zombie movie or anything like that. It’s not about the epidemic; it’s focused on the couple, but it’s not a love story. Since I’ve seen it, I can’t get it out of my head and I cannot explain why. It’s powerful in a non obvious way. I’m going to use a comment from someone on imdb“I still don’t know if it’s brilliant or pathetic. Photography is amazing. Some disgusting scenes that could have been cut, some great ones that will make you remember your own past. I enjoyed specially Eva's "Blade Runner style" narration, with all those thoughts about love and the meaning of life. Maybe that's what the movie is all about; love is the only thing that makes sense in our lives. Anyway, at the end I realized that a movie which brings us such controversial feelings, is a far from being pathetic.”
But I want your opinion, so watch it!

Here's the trailer, it's a little bit misleading, so you really have to see the whole thing :)

Taare Zameen Par (Like the Stars on Earth, 2007)

Plot, copied from Imdb: An eight year old boy is thought to be lazy and a troublemaker, until the new art teacher has the patience and compassion to discover the real problem behind his struggles in school.

A breathtaking Indian picture. It beautifully portrays everything that is wrong with our school system and learning process in most of our grammar schools. It shows what the wrong approach from teachers and parents can do to a helpless child, who doesn’t and cannot know how to deal with his problems. There are many youngsters like the main character, who could conquer the world with their intelligence, abilities and the world-is-a-magical-place attitude.

The main actor Darsheel Safary (11 years old at the time) is the most talented young actor I have seen. He makes you completely understand what the character thinks, feels, desires. He is so brilliant I cannot explain. The whole story is powerful, magical, compelling and mesmerizing and most of all as close to real life as you can get. Because Indians love colors, music and dancing there is a lot of that. But it makes it even more special and of course two and a half hours long :) I could not stop thinking about this movie for a whole week and I will never forget how it made me feel and that’s the real measure for a good film. It simply does not matter what kind of movie type person you are, this is a MUST see!

The Return

I have been away and lazy for way too long. I just reread my posts and discovered my writing is not so bad. Surprise, surprise. So now that I have some time on my hands I shall continue with my passion. Let’s review my list of movies to see.

J.Edgar

As a DiCaprio fan I am not totally unbiased. The make-up is simply amazing. You can see Leonardo’s character in three different stages in his life. It's a political drama about the man who started the FBI. It’s interesting, well played and overall a good movie. I have seen it almost a year ago, that’s why I do not recall it well, but maybe that also says something about it.

The Ides of March and Drive

Both starring Ryan Gosling, who had a very successful year. The first one did not exceed my expectations. A political drama which shows us what you need to be like to get ahead in politics. I was looking for some sort of twist the whole time, but it did not grant my wish. On the other hand Drive showed a bit more promise from the second it started. The opening scene is brilliantly intense.  I must confess I was not entirely sure what the movie is about. And perhaps the story was not perfectly sought through. Gosling’s character is a wheelman, but his regular job is as a mechanic and also as a stuntman in Hollywood. He lives alone and is a bit of a lonely wolf, until he meets his neighbor Irene (Carrey Mulligan), who has a child and a husband who’s in jail. They both appear a little out of this world, vulnerable on the inside, but playing tough. That’s what connects them. There are a few awesome slow motion scenes accompanied by great emotion provoking music. If you are looking for fast moving, story bound movie I do not recommend it. But if you are more of an “artsy feely” type, you should definitely see it.

A Dangerous Method was a little bit disappointing. Did not feel the relationship between the main characters. I do not know their exact relationship and after watching it I still do not know. If they wanted to show it to a larger scale of audience, they should do a better job J . This is also the worst I have seen of Keira Knightly, she came across as over exaggerating and unbelievable.

The Iron Lady was really a masterpiece make-up wise, the storytelling is too fast and it leaves you shrugging your shoulders saying “ok”. Meryl Streep simply is a genius.
